Elizabeth A. Kaveny, partner in noted Chicago plaintiffs’ law firm Burke Wise Morrissey Kaveny (BWMK), has been named President-Elect of the Chicago Chapter of the American Inns of Court for the organization’s upcoming 2013 to 2014 membership year. Announcement of her selection was made September 24, 2013 at the Chapter meeting held at the Metropolitan Club of Chicago.

Also at the meeting, Judge Diane Wood was named to receive the Judge Joel Flaum Award, given annually to a member of the Chicago legal community who embodies the principles of the American Inns of Court.

Since the founding of the first American Inn of Court in 1980, lawyers, judges, academics and students throughout the nation have participated in the organization’s mission of promoting professionalism, civility, ethics and excellent legal skills at the American bench and bar. Today, more than 27,000 members participate on a regular basis in more than 350 chartered American Inns of Court.

Ms. Kaveny during her professional career has obtained numerous verdicts and settlements of plaintiff personal injury, medical malpractice and professional malpractice actions, each in excess of $1 million and some at more than $10 million. In the peer-selected Illinois Leading Lawyers Network, she has been named one of the state’s Top 10 women litigators and Top 10 women personal injury lawyers. A founding name partner of her own firm after just 10 years in practice, she joined Burke Wise Morrissey Kaveny as a named partner in 2010.

Among other professional activities, Ms. Kaveny regularly holds leadership positions in the Illinois Trial Lawyers Association, has been a director of the Women’s Bar Association of Illinois, and frequently speaks on litigation-related topics before those and other organizations. She has taught courses at the National Institute of Trial Advocacy, and for more than 15 years has been both an instructor in trial advocacy at Loyola University of Chicago Law School, and an adjunct professor of trial advocacy at NorthwesternUniversityLawSchool. In 2013 Ms. Kaveny was among a select group of lawyers named to a bipartisan screening committee that will help select Circuit Court judges for appointment to fill interim vacancies on the Cook County Circuit Court
