BWMK Partner Elizabeth A. Kaveny Receives WBAI’s Top Women Lawyers in Leadership Award
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Chicago (Nov. 4, 2014)
Burke, Wise, Morrissey & Kaveny Partner Elizabeth A. Kaveny and five other women received the WBAI 2014 Top Women Lawyers in Leadership Award at an inaugural reception on Oct. 23, 2014, at the Hotel Allegro in Chicago.
The award winners shared their wisdom on such topics as their career and family demands, leadership, mentoring, listening, managing time, and what advice they would now offer their 25-year-old selves. These professionals also expressed their frustrations that women have not been able to make faster inroads into top legal positions, while also offering advice on what each person could do to remedy the problem. The video also included comments from professional women the lawyers have worked with, including the people who nominated them.
Two prominent attorneys who previously practiced law with Elizabeth A. Kaveny at her prior firm — Patricia C. Bobb and Cook County Circuit Court Judge Lorna E. Propes — together made their case for why Beth was a truly deserving recipient, citing both her likeability and the toughness she employs to protect her clients’ interests.
“She’s strong, but at the same time, you can’t really get mad at her,” said Bobb, “which I think is an enormous strength.”
“She is an immensely charming woman, yet she’s a very tough person,” added Judge Propes. “So I don’t know whether it’s better to say she’s charming but she’s tough or she’s tough but she’s charming.”
The evening’s other honorees were Maria Green, senior vice president, general counsel and secretary of Illinois Tool Works Inc.; Amy B. Manning, the Chicago managing partner and an executive committee member of McGuire Woods LLP; Virginia Martinez, senior policy analyst at the Illinois Latino Family Commission; Jennifer M. Mikulina, a capital partner and intellectual property lawyer at McDermott Will & Emery LLP; and Kay L. Schichtel, a defense trial lawyer and a founding partner of Swanson, Martin & Bell, LLP.
After the video presentation, each honoree stepped forward to receive an award and shared comments with the large gathering before posing for photographs.
The Women’s Bar Association of Illinois celebrates its centennial year in 2014. It is among the oldest and largest bar associations in the state, having been organized by nine Chicago metropolitan area women lawyers six years before women had the right to vote.
Its mission remains to promote and foster the interests and welfare of women lawyers; to encourage a spirit of friendship and mutual helpfulness among its members; to aid in the enactment of legislation for the common good and the administration of justice; and to promote and protect the interests and the rights of women.
During Ms. Kaveny’s career in trial law, she has obtained numerous verdicts and settlements of plaintiff personal injury, medical malpractice and professional malpractice actions each in excess of $1 million, and some surpassing $10 million.
Of the peer-selected Illinois Leading Lawyers, Ms. Kaveny has been named among the state’s Top 10 women litigators and Top 10 women personal injury lawyers. A founding name partner of her own firm after just 10 years of practice, she joined Burke Wise Morrissey Kaveny as a name partner in 2010.
